Teacher Workshops

Lehigh Valley Zoo's programs for educators are focused on empowering educators with a strong foundation in ecological literacy, skills in inquiry-based learning, and principles of field investigation. Our professional development programs provide educators with necessary knowledge, skills and resources to bring meaningful environmental and sustainability education to their students or other audiences and ideas applicable to the classroom. All program activities and materials provided are designed to support Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors to address national standards for inquiry-based science learning.

Frogs, Newts, and Axolotls … Oh My! Workshop
This is an interdisciplinary program connects educators to their students while focusing on the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content. Educators will learn about the life cycle of frogs and other amphibians, including their behavior and adaptations, as well as the unique habitats in which they live. This program will also discuss threats to the frog population, including disease and those caused by humans. This workshop will include hands-on activities. Participants should dress accordingly for the outdoor activities. Activities are aligned with the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content.

Plant Life Workshop
Lehigh Valley Zoo's Education Staff is offering this interdisciplinary program designed to introduce educators to a wide variety of hands-on activities that encourages curiosity in learning about our natural world. Educators will learn about coniferous and deciduous trees, endangered plants, and the threat caused by invasive species. The program will also explore the importance of plants for animal and human use, and discuss ways that we can preserve the environment for future generations. Participants will learn innovative teaching strategies and how best to use the Zoo as a learning resource for students and teachers. Activities are aligned with the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content.

World of Rainforests Workshop
Lehigh Valley Zoo's Education Staff is offering this interdisciplinary program designed to introduce educators to a wide variety of hands-on activities that encourages curiosity in learning about our natural world. Educators will learn about the physical and ecological structure of the rainforest, as well as animals and plants native to the area, including their unique adaptations. The program will discuss the impact of human activities and climate change on the health of the rainforests, and explain ways that these important ecosystems can be preserved for the future. Participants will learn innovative teaching strategies and how best to use the Zoo as a learning resource for students and teachers. Activities are aligned with the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content.
